If you’ve ever thought, “Okay, but what if our wedding venue had mountain views, desert gardens, AND giraffes?” — let me introduce you to The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens.

Located in Palm Desert, California, The Living Desert is easily one of the most unique wedding venues I’ve had the opportunity to photograph. I recently spent the day there photographing a styled wedding shoot, which meant getting to explore so many different areas of the property — and there is SO much more here than I expected.

Between the desert gardens, mountain views, beautiful ceremony setting, and the possibility of literally feeding giraffes on your wedding morning, this is such a special option for couples looking for something a little different in the Palm Springs area.

Getting Married at Big Horn Café

Wedding ceremonies at The Living Desert take place at Big Horn Café, a designated event space overlooking the surrounding mountains — including the mountainside where you can spot the park’s bighorn sheep. Hence the name, Big Horn Café.

It’s such a distinctly Living Desert backdrop. Instead of a traditional ballroom or generic ceremony lawn, you’re exchanging vows with the desert landscape stretching out behind you and the possibility of bighorn sheep making an appearance on the mountain in the distance.

It gives you an actual home base for your ceremony while still feeling completely connected to the environment around you.

But one of my favorite parts about photographing a wedding here is what happens once the ceremony is over.

You’re definitely not limited to that one backdrop for the rest of your wedding photos.

The Living Desert has so many different gardens, pathways, desert landscapes, palms, mountain views, and little pockets throughout the property that we can jump between for couples portraits. Your ceremony can happen at Big Horn Café, and then the two of you can wander off with me and create an entirely different feeling for your portraits just a few minutes away.

It’s one of those venues where your wedding gallery can feel incredibly varied without having to leave the property at all.

Feed the Giraffes on Your Wedding Morning

This might be one of the coolest ways I can imagine starting a wedding day.

Couples getting married at The Living Desert can have the opportunity to visit the giraffes in the morning and feed them lettuce.

Yes. On your wedding day.

Imagine getting ready, heading over together, and starting the morning feeding giraffes before everything else begins.

It’s such a fun experience on its own, but it also creates photographs that feel completely different from traditional wedding-day portraits. Instead of starting the day with posed photos, you get an actual experience together — and I get to document the reactions, movement, laughter, and all the weird little moments that happen when there’s suddenly a giraffe approximately two feet away from you.

Those are exactly the kinds of memories I want your wedding gallery to hold.

Golden Hour With the Giraffes

And then we come back.

Because the giraffe area is absolutely incredible around golden hour.

The warm desert light, open landscape, surrounding mountains, and giraffes moving through the background can make the portraits feel like you’ve traveled somewhere completely different — while still being right here in Southern California.

If I were helping one of my couples build their photography timeline for a Living Desert wedding, I would absolutely protect some time around sunset to sneak away.

This isn’t a venue where I’d want to rush through couples portraits in fifteen minutes.

There are simply too many good places to explore.

So Many Gardens for Wedding Photos

One of the biggest surprises for me while photographing at The Living Desert was just how much variety there is throughout the property.

It isn’t simply a zoo with a wedding venue attached to it. The Living Desert is also a botanical garden, and there are completely different landscapes tucked throughout the grounds.

You can move from palms and lush garden areas into distinctly desert landscapes, find pathways surrounded by plants, use the mountains as your backdrop, and then end up somewhere completely different for the next set of portraits.

For couples who love the Palm Springs desert aesthetic but don’t necessarily want every wedding photo to have the exact same resort backdrop, this gives us SO much to play with.

And because everything is on the property, we can create that variety without disappearing from your guests for an hour to drive to another portrait location.

It’s exactly the kind of environment I love for my documentary and editorial approach to California wedding photography.

Something I always pay attention to when I’m photographing at a venue is the staff — because the people working behind the scenes can completely change how a wedding day feels.

Everyone I worked with at The Living Desert was incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating throughout our shoot.

They helped us navigate the property, made sure we had what we needed, and genuinely made the entire experience easy.

That might not be the flashiest thing to put on a wedding venue checklist, but it matters. A LOT.
