7 Central California Wedding Venues I Love as a Wedding Photographer

There is something incredibly special about getting married in Central California. Within just a few hours, you can go from rolling hills and open ranch land to historic architecture, mountain views, vineyards, and the California coast. It gives couples so much room to create a wedding day that actually feels like them.

As a Central California wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings throughout Bakersfield, Tehachapi, Santa Barbara, Carmel, and beyond. And while I will always believe that the people and the moments matter far more than the backdrop, a beautiful venue can create the setting for a day that feels completely unforgettable.

If you’re searching for Central California wedding venues, these are a few I’ve photographed that are absolutely worth considering.

Sand Canyon Ranch | Tehachapi, California

For couples dreaming of an outdoor wedding surrounded by open land and that warm California light, Sand Canyon Ranch in Tehachapi is such a beautiful option.

Tehachapi has this rugged, romantic quality that photographs incredibly well. The landscape feels open and untouched, and as the sun starts dropping behind the hills, everything takes on that warm, golden tone that makes Central California weddings so beautiful.

Sand Canyon Ranch is especially perfect for couples who want their wedding to feel relaxed, intimate, and connected to the outdoors rather than overly polished or formal. There is plenty of room for candid moments to unfold naturally, which is always one of my favorite parts of photographing a wedding day.

If you’re searching for a Tehachapi wedding venue, a Central California ranch wedding, or somewhere that gives you gorgeous outdoor portraits without having to leave the property, Sand Canyon Ranch is one to put on your list.

Nirvana Estate

Nirvana Estate has that private, intimate feeling that makes an entire wedding day feel like you’ve stepped away from everything else for a while.

Estate weddings are some of my favorites to photograph because everything can unfold in one space—from getting ready in the morning to the ceremony, portraits, dinner, and eventually everyone ending up on the dance floor.

There is also something about an estate setting that lends itself beautifully to a mixture of documentary and editorial wedding photography. You have beautiful architecture and intentional spaces for portraits, while still having plenty of opportunities for the completely unplanned photographs that end up meaning the most.

For couples looking for an elevated Central California estate wedding venue that still feels personal and intimate, Nirvana Estate is a beautiful option.

Santa Barbara Courthouse | Santa Barbara, California

The Santa Barbara Courthouse will forever be one of those California wedding locations that doesn’t need much added to it.

The Spanish Colonial architecture, archways, staircases, greenery, warm stone, and incredible Santa Barbara light make practically every corner photograph beautifully.

It’s especially perfect for couples planning an intimate wedding or elopement who still want the day to feel intentional and special. A courthouse wedding doesn’t have to mean walking in, signing paperwork, and going home. You can make an entire experience out of it.

Get ready together or separately, have your ceremony at the courthouse, wander through Santa Barbara afterward for portraits, grab drinks or dinner with your favorite people, and let the day unfold without forcing it into a traditional wedding timeline.

For couples searching for a Santa Barbara Courthouse wedding photographer or planning a Santa Barbara elopement, this is easily one of my favorite locations.

Cathedral Ceremony + Seven Oaks Country Club Reception | Bakersfield, California

If you love the idea of a traditional ceremony but want an entirely different atmosphere for your reception, having your ceremony and reception at separate locations can be such a beautiful way to structure the day.

A cathedral ceremony brings a sense of tradition and permanence that is hard to recreate elsewhere. The architecture, long aisles, quiet moments before the ceremony, and everyone gathered together create photographs that already feel like they belong in an old family album.

From there, moving the celebration to Seven Oaks Country Club in Bakersfield completely shifts the energy of the day.

Seven Oaks gives couples an elegant setting for cocktail hour, portraits, dinner, and the reception while still allowing plenty of room for the day to feel relaxed and celebratory.

For couples searching for a Bakersfield wedding venue or considering a Seven Oaks Country Club wedding, pairing a traditional church ceremony with a Seven Oaks reception gives you the best of both worlds.

And selfishly, as a Bakersfield wedding photographer, I love getting to photograph that transition—from the quiet and tradition of the ceremony to everyone finally letting loose at the reception.

White Star Ranch

If your dream wedding includes open space, warm earth tones, and a setting that feels distinctly California, White Star Ranch is another beautiful Central California wedding venue to consider.

Ranch weddings have a way of letting people relax. There is less pressure for everything to feel overly formal, and that usually means the photographs become even more about the people—the hugs, movement, kids running around, friends gathering outside, and all of the little interactions happening between the “big” moments.

The open landscape also gives us room to step away for a few minutes around sunset without completely disappearing from your wedding.

For couples who love a more organic, earthy wedding aesthetic, White Star Ranch fits beautifully into that vision.

Wedgewood Weddings Carmel | Carmel, California

Carmel might be one of my favorite places in California to photograph.

It has everything: the coast, beautiful architecture, huge trees, soft foggy mornings, golden evenings, and that slightly nostalgic California feeling that looks incredible both digitally and on 35mm film.

Wedgewood Weddings Carmel gives couples the structure and ease of an established wedding venue while still putting you in one of the most beautiful areas along the Central Coast.

And because you’re in Carmel, your wedding weekend doesn’t have to begin and end with the ceremony. Your guests can explore the coast, spend time in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and turn the wedding into an entire weekend experience.

For couples looking at Carmel wedding venues or wanting the feeling of a destination wedding without leaving California, this area is hard to beat.

As a Carmel wedding photographer, I especially love the opportunity to mix traditional wedding-day photographs with the quieter, imperfect moments that make coastal weddings feel so alive.

Tannenbaum Events Center

For couples drawn toward trees, mountain scenery, and a setting that feels removed from the city, Tannenbaum Events Center offers an entirely different side of the Central California wedding experience.

There’s something about being surrounded by nature that immediately changes the pace of a wedding day. Everything feels a little quieter and more intimate, while still giving you the space to bring all of your favorite people together.

It’s especially beautiful for couples who want nature to do most of the decorating for them. Rather than needing to completely transform a blank space, the surrounding landscape becomes part of the atmosphere of the wedding itself.

It also gives us so many opportunities for photographs that feel organic rather than staged—walking through the property together, sneaking away as the light changes, or simply documenting everyone enjoying the space.

How to Choose the Right Central California Wedding Venue

When you’re touring wedding venues, it’s easy to get caught up in whether the chairs are right or if the bridal suite matches your color palette. Those things can matter, but there are a few things I would pay even more attention to.

Think about how you actually want your wedding day to feel.

Do you picture everyone outside drinking cocktails as the sun goes down? Do you want a traditional ceremony inside a cathedral? Do you want 150 people dancing until the end of the night, or 20 people sitting around one long dinner table?

Also pay attention to the light, where you’ll get ready, how much of the property you’ll have access to, whether your ceremony will be in direct afternoon sun, and how much travel is required between locations.

Those little logistical choices can have a surprisingly big impact on how relaxed your wedding day feels.

But more than anything, choose somewhere that feels like the two of you.

Because ten, twenty, or fifty years from now, I don’t think you’re going to care whether every detail of your venue was perfect.

You’re going to remember what it felt like when you saw each other for the first time. Your mom helping you get dressed. Your best friend crying during the ceremony. Your grandparents dancing. Someone’s shoes coming off halfway through the reception. Everyone you love being together in the same place.

The venue creates the setting. The people create the story.

Looking for a Central California Wedding Photographer?

Whether you’re planning a wedding in Bakersfield, Tehachapi, Santa Barbara, Carmel, or somewhere tucked away along the Central California coast, my approach to photographing weddings is rooted in preserving what the day actually felt like.

The big moments, of course—but also the movement, the people, the imperfect photographs, the quiet exchanges, the chaos, and all of those tiny pieces of the day you didn’t even realize were happening.

A mixture of digital, film, documentary storytelling, and a little editorial direction when you need it—so when you look back at your photographs years from now, they don’t just show you what your wedding looked like.

They bring you back to it.
